What to Look For When Buying a Blank for DTF
Not every shirt is DTF-friendly. Here’s what actually matters:
- Fabric weight. 4.2 oz to 6.1 oz cotton works best. Below 4 oz, the shirt distorts under heat. Above 8 oz, it holds too much heat and slows production.
- Yarn type. Ring-spun is smoother than carded open-end. Smooth means less fibrillation. Fibrillation is when shirt fibers poke through your print after 5 washes. BELLA+CANVAS 3001 is ring-spun. Gildan 5000 is open-end but tight enough for most jobs.
- Dye process. Garment-dyed blanks like Comfort Colors can shift shade between lots. Reactive-dyed tees are more stable. If your brand color is specific, test a piece first.
- Side seams. Tubular shirts twist. Side-seamed construction keeps your front print centered after washing. It’s a $0.20 upgrade that saves reprints.
- Shrinkage. Preshrunk cotton still moves 3–5% on first wash. Press your transfer after the blank is washed if the client needs exact placement. Or buy a size up and tell them.

Storing Blanks Before You Press
Humidity is the enemy. Keep shirts in the bag, off the floor, below 75°F. Cotton absorbs moisture and steam during pressing causes spotting.
Don’t stack boxes more than 5 high. The bottom blanks compress and leave press marks.
Rotate stock. Use older shirts first. Cotton can yellow after 18 months in a warehouse, especially Natural and White.
